It was said by Tenzin Gyatso:
Our prime purpose in this life is to help others.
And . . .
if you cannot help them,
at least don't hurt them.
I cannot tell you how often those seeking glory or notoriety have inadvertently squashed the hopes and dreams of those attempting to make things better.
A louder voice doesn't make anyone listen more intently.
A more stern hand doesn't make anyone behave any better.
A belittling attitude doesn't positively adjust anyone else's.
